John Steines
History:
1. Youth: My exploration in art began very early, by age 4-5. My mother quickly identified that getting me involved in an art project resulted in deep attention and concentration which could rarely be disturbed by surrounding activity, and I loved it.
2. Study: Intensive self-study and periodic professional classes, and self-driven exploration onsite.
Related Background:
1. BS Nursing, Critical Care. Service on the State of Wisconsin Health Advisory Planning Group. Public & University speaking on Resiliency related to trauma. Trauma is universal. Healing is encouraged through active non-judgmental listening to story. The ability to speak out and be heard is inherently a healing process.
2. Nature & Environment:
A. From childhood on, deep encounters with nature provide a strong spiritual connection, and function in a role of as healer and teacher. Isolation in nature allows for meditative reflection and activity. Centered within Wisconsin's southern edge of Canadian Shield on into US & Canadian Great Lakes Habitats, with extended trips into isolated Western US Habitats, primarily canyon habitat and Pacific waters.
B. Active Engagement:
- Rocky creeks with numerous rapids and waterfalls, and their surrounding wooded habitat. That Landscapes mention functions as a psychic home. Canadian Tom Thomson is an early inspirational.
C. Environmental Stewardship:
- Yahara Parkway, Madison, WI. 1997-99.
- Initiator/Co-Founder Friends of Startkweather Creek, 2002 The Starkweather Solstice Festival initiated in 2002 with intent to elevate attention toward agrarian/seasonal calendars.
D. Major Environmental/Design Project.
2014: Ag Education. Silverwood County Park (original Ho-Chunk land).
- 2015: Initiated 'Ten Variations on a Theme' 10 giant circular corn cribs.
- 2016: Mapping a draft Master Plan for the park based on Leopold's principles of 'The Land Informs'. My proposed and adapted Dane County Park Plan links Savanna habitat across the property to include agroforestry fields and continuous connected strips of Oak Savanna into Prairie habitat, where the farm 'field' becomes the island element, rather than that pollinator/savanna habitats exist as isolated communities. While my proudest advocacy achievement, the plan is currently incompletely implemented (I departed Friends Governance in 2002-3).
